WIKILEAKS: U.S. Fought To Lower Minimum Wage In Haiti So Hanes And Levis Would Stay Cheap

By Robert Johnson

A Wikileaks post published on The Nation shows that the Obama Administration fought to keep Haitian wages at 31 cents an hour.

(This article was taken down by The Nation due to an embargo, but it was excerpted at Columbia Journalism Review.)

It started when Haiti passed a law two years ago raising its minimum wage to 61 cents an hour. According to an embassy cable:

This infuriated American corporations like Hanes and Levi Strauss that pay Haitians slave wages to sew their clothes. They said they would only fork over a seven-cent-an-hour increase, and they got the State Department involved. The U.S. ambassador put pressure on Haiti’s president, who duly carved out a $3 a day minimum wage for textile companies (the U.S. minimum wage, which itself is very low, works out to $58 a day).

Haiti has about 25,000 garment workers. If you paid each of them $2 a day more, it would cost their employers $50,000 per working day, or about $12.5 million a year … As of last year Hanes had 3,200 Haitians making t-shirts for it. Paying each of them two bucks a day more would cost it about $1.6 million a year. Hanesbrands Incorporated made $211 million on $4.3 billion in sales last year.

Thanks to U.S. intervention, the minimum was raised only to 31 cents.

These papers have come to light thanks to Haiti Liberte, a small Haitian newspaper with offices in Port-au-Prince and New York City.

Anonymous said: Unnie!! Can I ask you for some advise?? I have been fighting with my parents a lot about school. (I'm a hs student) They call me lazy and unmotivated but when I come home from school I'm way too tired to do anything else really :c They don't understand how hard high school is now compared to when they went to hs. How do I explain/show them I'm not exaggerating about how hard and tiring it is?? It's as if they don't want to understand it T.T

danggeunee:

"I come home from school I’m way too tired to do anything else really" Unless you’re sick or you have some condition or your home situation isn’t good, this is a typical teen excuse. Get over it, if you can’t even handle high school because it’s "too tiresome", you might as well just give up on the rest of your life.

"how hard high school is now compared to when they went to hs." No. Bless yourself lucky to be born in a generation that’s a tiny bit less ignorant than the previous one. It’s not harder. It’s more and faster, but not on the level you can’t adapt.

If you’re a high school student and you think school is hard, difficult, stressful tiresome you really need to get over yourself because as useless high school is and as mentally draining it can be at times, it’s still just only high school and you need to get over it. When I came back home from school I had to translate and rewrite e v e r y t h i n g  into Korean or I had to look up almost every word that I had written down and afterwards I did my homework and I still managed to go to bed at 10PM. That’s what y’all do: y’all spend hours on the internet, sleep 5 hours a night, procrastinate and cram homework to end up crying about how stressed and tired you are. You’re a student, you adapt to the rest. Not the other way around. Change your lifestyle, get over yourself and do what you’re supposed to do.
